Recently, a viral marketing reel claimed you could “skip marketing school and become an SEO expert in 60 seconds” by utilizing a simple data extraction loophole.
While that’s a bold claim, the core mechanism behind the video is 100% accurate and devastatingly effective. It relies on a process called Sitemap Scraping.
Instead of guessing what keywords your competitors are targeting, or paying hundreds of dollars for SEO tools, you can simply extract their entire content roadmap for free. Here is exactly how to execute this growth hack in 2026 using Apify.
Why Scrape a Sitemap?
A sitemap.xml file is a public directory that websites provide to Google to ensure all their pages are indexed. It literally contains a list of every single URL the structural engineers of that company deem important.
By extracting this list, you instantly uncover:
- Their Content Strategy: You see exactly which blog topics they cover, organized by subfolder.
- Their Site Architecture: You understand how they SILO their products and categories.
- Content Gaps: By comparing their sitemap to your own, you immediately find the high-converting pages you are missing.
Step 1: Locate the Sitemap
First, find your target competitor. Go to your browser and type theirwebsite.com/sitemap.xml.
If that returns a 404 error, try typing theirwebsite.com/robots.txt instead; this file almost always contains a direct link to the sitemap at the very bottom.
Step 2: Extract the URLs Using Apify
A sitemap for a large competitor might contain 50,000 URLs spread across dozens of nested XML files. You cannot copy and paste this manually.
Instead, we use Apify to automate it.
- Create a free account on Apify (you get $5 in free monthly credits).
- Go to the Apify Store and search for the Website Content Crawler.
- In the input configuration, simply paste the URL of the sitemap you found in Step 1.
- Set the toggle for Extract Content to False if you only want the URLs, or leave it as True if you actually want the scraper to visit every single URL and download the text from their blogs.
- Click Start.
Step 3: Analyze and Steal the Strategy
Within 60 seconds, Apify will finish running. Click the Export button and download the results as an Excel sheet (CSV).
You now have a spreadsheet containing every page on your competitor’s website.
Filter the spreadsheet by the phrase /blog/ or /resources/. Sort the URLs alphabetically. You are now looking at their exact SEO roadmap. You can literally copy their article titles, paste them into an AI writer, and create a better, more updated piece of content for your own website.
Taking it a Step Further
If you left “Extract Content” as True in Apify, your Excel sheet won’t just have URLs. It will contain the actual <H1> tags, <title> tags, meta descriptions, and raw text of every article.
You can feed this entire dataset into a custom GPT or an LLM like Claude, and ask it: “Here is the entire content library of my competitor. Act as a Chief Marketing Officer. Analyze their strategy and outline 10 high-value articles I should write to steal their traffic.”
That is how you execute a 10x marketing strategy without spending a dime on enterprise SEO tools.
